Candidate Information

Question of the Month

Why are some candidates listed as both Democratic and Republican?

Candidates for Magisterial District Judge, Court of Common Pleas, and school board may file to run in both the Democratic and Republican party primaries.  This is called "cross filing." Cross filing allows primary voters a wider choice of candidates in these local races, which are considered non-partisan It also gives candidates an increased chance of appearing on the November ballot.  Sometimes candidates will win in both primaries. In that case, both parties will be listed by their name on the fall ballot.

Cross filing makes the ballot confusing, since party affiliation is an important factor for many voters.  But, because the party listed on the ballot does not necessarily reflect a candidate's own political party, voters are encouraged to use other resources, like those listed below, to make an informed decision.

We Asked.  They Answered:

  • How much courtroom experience have you had, and what kind of cases have you handled?
  • What types of alternative sentencing might you impose, and why?

LWV Advocacy
LWVUS Declares that the United States is in a Constitutional Crisis

"The foundational principles that have sustained our democracy — checks and balances, the rule of law, free and fair elections — are under direct and sustained threat. In this extraordinary moment, we cannot proceed with business as usual. All Americans — no matter who you voted for in 2024 — need to come together, stand united, and fight back to save our democracy. We cannot afford to fail the generations to come.”

Call to Action:

Oppose the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act.
LWVUS, LWVPA, and LWVPGH ask all League members and the public to contact their US Senators and ask them to vote “NO” on the SAVE Act. The US House of Representatives passed this bill on April 10, 2025. Now it is in the Senate for consideration.

The SAVE Act

  • would require in-person citizenship documentation to register to vote, putting an unfunded burden on all county elections offices

  • would exclude millions of eligible citizens from registering to vote if they don't have passports, access to their birth certificates, or if those documents do not reflect their name following a name change if their married name does not match their birth certificate name.

  • would effectively end online voter registration and mail-in voting

  • would limit voter registration efforts by nonprofits like the LWV

  • would require military voters, and any other voter who moves, to present documentation every time they re-register to vote due to a move
